To begin the Anzac Day Long Weekend, The Parker Cup rivalry between Ringwood Redbacks and Heathmont Jets is back under lights for the second year running in what shapes as the perfect introduction to an action-packed weekend.

Ringwood will be hoping to retain the Parker cup after being on the right-side of the legder in their last outing, amid lockdowns last season.

However, Brett Rowe’s outfit would love to avenge their Round Three loss from last season, after his side were leading in the last quarter by as many as 18 points.

“We let ourselves down with our pressure around the ball, and our contested ball last year on the Friday night was poor,” said Rowe of their fade out under lights 12 months ago.

“We think if we’re dominate around the contest, then we can give our forwards good service.”

Rowe feels privileged and honoured to play in match that has been pencilled in for all Redback players and supporters and despite having begun the season 2-0, there has been no complacency from Rowe’s side, and he believes a win against Heathmont could be the springboard for the rest of their campaign.

“We feel very honoured to be a part of it, the clubs have had a great rivalry over a long period of time.

“To start three and zip is a perfect start, if you can get a break on those other sides, it’s a massive benefit,

“We think it’s a great statement for the club and the competition if we can beat a really good team in Heathmont.”

With a relatively different outfit from last season, critics have been quick to jump off Ringwood. However, Rowe is confident his side has the personnel to compete for years to come.

“We have been written off if you like because of our personnel, but deep down we’re still more than a contender internally.”

“Josh Meerkotter has shown some good signs, Jett Latchford who we have thrown into the ruck has showed he is more than capable to compete at senior level, and Jack Murfett has taken his opportunity down back.

“Dennis Pagan once said, your time comes in a spotlight, there’s going to be times when you have to step into that spotlight.”

Rowe says the way his side has played their first two games will be no different to the way they will play this Friday, backing in their system.

“Stick to what you know, have trust in each other and the gameplan, it’ll hold up and give us the best opportunity to win.”

The game will take place under lights, this Friday from 7:00pm at HE Parker Reserve.
