BAYSWATER – SEASON REVIEW

A tough year for Bayswater who managed just the six wins for the seasons, falling out of touch with the top five of Division One.

Bayswater

Ladder Position: 8th (6-12, 80.57%)

Best and Fairest:

Leading Goalkicker: Josh Treeby (24)

Summary:

Bayswater won six games throughout the 2022 season, unable to find that consistency they were after. The club were able to push finals sides such as Mooroolbark and Mitcham and even knock off Montrose when playing at their best. However, they weren’t quite able to maintain that level of performance throughout the entire year.

The club did bring in some welcomed experience at the start of the season with Scott and Wayne McInerney both returning to the club.

Key Players:

Another standout year by Ben White, finishing third in the EFNL league best and fairest, also making the Division One Team of the Year. The two Galvin brothers, Bryce and Joel were once again at the top of their game, in the best ten and nine times throughout the year. The two were members of the Bayswater 2010-2019 Team of the Decade and have been key for the club.

Josh Treeby is an exciting prospect for the club going forward, kicking 24 goals, and leading the goal kicking for the club.

Best Win: Round 8 – Bayswater 10.12 72 def. Montrose 5.10 40 @Bayswater Oval

One of their best wins of the season came just before the halfway point of the year when they defeated Montrose at home by 32 points. The first half remained tight with the Waters having a six-point lead. However, they turned things on in the second half, kicking six goals to two for a comfortable 32-point win. Two of the club’s young stars Treeby and Haasbroek combined for five goals while Daniel Kitto was named the club’s best player on the ground.

Off-Season Focus:

The Division One double relegation will be a big talking point across the season next year. To avoid finishing in the bottom two, the club would ideally like to top up their side with a bit more depth, especially in the forward half of the ground. Bayswater was the ninth-ranked attacking side in the division, averaging 61 points per game, unable to score 100 plus points in any match. Treeby and Haasbroek led the goal-scoring for Bayswater this year and will be very important in future years but it would be great if they could pull in an experienced key forward to spread the workload.

Sides above them such as Montrose, Croydon, Wantirna South and Mitcham have all continued to focus on recruiting. The last thing the club wants is for that gap between Bayswater and the finals contenders to grow further.

So far, Bayswater has announced a couple of recruits, Charlie and Jack Stewart who have played plenty of footy off the half-back.

A big positive is their youth, a lot of their best players are still relatively young and if they can retain them while closing the gap on the top sides, they can look to really set themselves up for the future.

Bayswater Juniors

The Bayswater Junior Football Club had 10.5 teams in season 2022. The Under 14C Girls had a positive season, winning 10 of their 14 games while the 11D Boys won seven of their ten matches.

Thomas Hardman had a great year for the club, winning the Under 15 Division D Best and Fairest. In the Under 13 Division D boys, Levi McPherson won the league best and fairest with 24 votes.

The club are having their junior rooms done up ahead of the 2023 season.
