On this week’s edition of The Vault, we take a look at the history between the Beaconsfield and South Belgrave Football Clubs as they compete for the Ric Crook Cup.
Beaconsfield Historian and Committee member Lawrie Canning speaks about the importance of the history below:
Ric Crook – Beaconsfield FC History
1978 – 1st Senior game after graduating from our juniors.
Played Seniors 1978, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 87, 88, 91, 92. Total of 141 senior games.
Premierships – 1980/81 – Awarded Best on ground in 1981 grand final.
Senior Captain – 1982/83; 88,
Dual Senior Best & Fairest – 1983 & 1988.

Reserves – 2010, 2011
U/18’s – 2005, 2006 (premiership), 2007 – Asst coach & Development Mgr (Premiership)
U/16’s – 1982, 1983
Associated with Beaconsfield Football club over 5 separate decades and the only person in the club’s history to coach Seniors, Reserves, Thirds and Fourths (as they were in the 80’s).
Rik has also made a massive contribution at South Belgrave FC (where he lived for 20+ years) as a long-time senior coach in the 1990’s and again in the 2000’s. He coached South Belgrave to a premiership in 1996 with a team featuring future Beaconsfield senior players – Andrew Williams & Matt Kenny as 17 yo’s. Rik also coached their Reserves to a premiership in 1995. He also played seniors with South Belgrave in 1993 & 94, winning the League goalkikcking in 1993 with over 100 goals for the season. He also played for their Vets team in the 1990’s. He was also a long-time chairman of selectors at that club and is regarded there as a local legend, just as he is at Beaconsfield. He was made a Life member of South Belgrave football club in recognition of his service there.
Rik remains involved in local football with his family’s move to San Remo as he is currently co-coach of Kilcunda-Bass Reserves team along with another well known Beaconsfield FC identity and life member Anthony “Jacko” Veltmeyer.
