Kilsyth FC join the 1000 EFNL games club having been an inaugural member when the league started in 1962. Apart from a three-year hiatus 1982-84 when the club joined the then VFA in a bold move before a return to the EFNL in 1985.
In the early years the Cougars spent the majority of the time in the top division, making finals in 1966, 1970 and 1973. A drop to Division 2 in 1975 resulted in a Premiership and an immediate return to the top division. By end of 1981 though the club was facing a drop to Division 3, before embarking on the short chapter in the VFA.
Six finals’ series in eight years saw Kilsyth progress from Division 4 back to Division 2 before a few bad years saw the club back in Division 4.
In addition to the three EFNL flags the club has another four Premierships prior to 1962.
Kilsyth have played their highest number of matches against Ferntree Gully (47), Forest Hill (46) and Fair Park (39). The Cougars’ best results have come against Surrey Park (73% of matches won) and Nunawading (63%). Worth acknowledging is the 12 of 27 matches won against Vermont in the 1960s and 70s. Not many teams have a ratio that high against the Eagles.
Kilsyth is one of only two clubs (with East Burwood) to have played in all five divisions. The club has played against 53 senior EFNL football teams and has a current winning ratio of 44% of the 999 games played.
