Inaugural Under 8’s Girls Competition | Opening Night

The Inaugural Under 8’s Girls competition began last Friday Night at Kings Park, Upper Ferntree Gully, with nearly 40 girls participating on the opening night.

The Eastern Football Netball League is the first league in the country to launch an Under 8’s Girls competition.

The girls were divided into four teams, playing under the league’s under-8 mixed rules, with all players given a fair opportunity to get involved on the field.

Paul Giannopoulos, Junior Football Manager was thrilled with the launch of the competition, with fantastic numbers for the first of four games of the competition.

“The league is really excited to help develop the junior pathway for girls football in the Eastern region,” Giannopoulos said.

“To see so many young girls play their first game, was really rewarding for all concerned.”

“We hope to see this competition eventually grow to a full fledged home and away season.”

Kodey Logan, Participation Coordinator at AFL Victoria is also looking forward to what the Under 8 Girls’ program will lead to further growth and development of female football.

“It was great to work alongside the league, to launch this brand new initiative,” Logan said.

“We’re hoping to see some very positive outcomes in terms of transition from Auskick to junior football for young girls.”

There’s still time for girls to join, the next game scheduled this Friday, 14th of July, at 5 pm at Kings Park, Upper Ferntree Gully.
