FIRST TASTE OF PREMIERSHIP SUCCESS

AARON Fiora and Nathan Thompson finally know what it feels like to get their hands on a senior premiership cup.

The ex-AFL pair were major contributors to Doncaster’s 59-point win over Wantirna South in the Division 3 Choose Tap Grand Final on Sunday.

With 18 years of AFL experience between them, neither player had won a premiership at a senior level.

Thompson, 35, was one of the best for the Sharks, imposing himself up forward and booting nine goals.

The former Hawthorn and North Melbourne player spoke of his belief in the club, where he is also a parent and coach of the Under 9’s junior side.

‘We knew if we stuck together we were really confident we could get the job done,’ Thompson said.

Fiora, 32, found momentum in the second half to booted three goals, including a spectacular set-shot from 60 metres.

Having played at the top level for Richmond and St Kilda, Fiora expressed his excitement to finally have a premiership medal around his neck.

‘It’s unbelievable. I can’t express how happy I am!’ he said.

Fiora joined the Sharks after a close friend suggested he take on a senior role at the club.

A risk that paid off, Fiora is already looking to the 2014 season.

‘I can’t not come back and try and help the boys in Division 2. Hopefully we can get a few more younger guys into the club and stay up there next year,’ he said.

Following its Grand Final win, Doncaster will move up into Division 2 for the 2014 season.
