Calmer Waters

By Briana Kendirian

Bayswater has started the season off with a bang with an incredible win on the weekend, defeating Upper Ferntree Gully, 97 to 30.

The result wouldn’t have raised many eyebrows across the league, with Upper Ferntree Gully tipped by many to be facing the drop this season, but with the conditions and the pressure Bayswater would’ve placed on themselves to win, the fixture shaped as a potential banana skin, early in the season.

The chance of an opening day upset was put to rest straight away with the Waters kicking five goals to one in the opening term, before shutting out the kings in the second half as they skipped through to a 67-point victory.

Star midfielder Ben White stepped into the Kurt Lopo shaped hole with a best on ground performance, whilst ex Balwyn man Alex Young was also impressive.

Key forward Josh Treeby bobbed up again, following on from his breakthrough 2021 campaign with a five-goal haul.

“It’s awesome to finally be back playing footy and to start the season off with a solid win on the weekend,” said Treeby.

“It was an unreal feeling to start off the year with a win and sing the song with all the boys.

“I think with the group we have and the culture at Bayswater there are some exciting times ahead for us.”

Treeby and Bayswater have big plans for the season ahead.

“As a side we play our best footy when we bring that defensive pressure, so I think for us to maintain the start we’ve had, we need to continually bring that pressure around the ground at all times.”

Although Bayswater finished 8th last year but are expecting to have a few more in the wins column this season, with Treeby targeting some consistency of his own.

“This season I’m wanting to play with more consistency and continue to provide an option forward for my teammates, I’m really enjoying my footy and it’s a credit to the environment we have at Bayswater.”
