ROWVILLE Junior Football Club president David Howlett speaks to Dan Campbell as his club prepares for the 2014 season.
Dan Campbell: Overall, were you satisfied with what the club achieved, both on and off the field, in 2013?
David Howlett: We were delighted in terms of what we achieved from a junior perspective and the link of “one club, one culture” linked into the footy program. We’ve got one football club and our whole aim was to link those two things together, so it’s basically a seamless process from Under 8’s through to our senior team. We’ve got the same footy plan and we probably made far greater strides than we expected to.
Approximately how many teams do you think you will field in 2014?
We’ll have 10.
What has the feeling been like around the club over the pre-season?
Last year there was a bit of disruption. [This season] it’s just been focussed on the club and the kids that want to play footy and that want to play for Rowville Footy Club. It has been pretty difficult with training venues and the like – we had our Under 17’s train in the Stamford carpark. That’s obviously something that councils have to address.
But the feeling around the club has been very positive. Everyone’s bought in to “one club, one culture” that we’ve put together.
If you had to pick one, which team do you think is the club’s best chance of winning a premiership this season?
If I had to pick one, I would pick the Under 17’s.
Is there a particular age group of players that you need as soon as possible to fill a team ahead of Round 1?
We’re pretty right in terms of the teams we’ve got, we’re all set. There’s some teams that could take one or two spots I guess. But we’re not looking for wholesale numbers to get a side on the ground.
If any players are interested in playing for Rowville Junior Football Club this season, what do they have to do?
The contact details are all on the website on the junior teams and away we go.
