CROYDON Junior Football Club vice president Wayne Campbell speaks to Dan Campbell as his club prepares for the 2014 season.
Dan Campbell: Overall, were you satisfied with what the club achieved, both on and off the field, in 2013?
Wayne Campbell: I only became vice president this year, but at the time my son was playing Under 13’s, I thought that considering the side we had, if we won six games for the year I would have been happy with that before it actually happened. As far as the other teams, besides the Under 14’s considering the talent we had in the side, I think we underachieved.
Approximately how many teams do you think you will field in 2014?
Eleven – Under 8’s, 9’s, 10’s, two 11’s, 12’s, 13’s, two 14’s, 15’s and 17s.
What has the feeling been like around the club over the pre-season?
We’ve had good numbers, it’s been really positive. Training’s been good and the boys have been training hard.
We’re looking at having a good season and hopefully we can better the things we did last year. Our little fellas haven’t started training yet, but 14’s, 15’s and 17’s have been hitting the track hard in all sorts of weather at the moment with the way it is. We’re looking for them to have a big one this year.
If you had to pick one, which team do you think is the club’s best chance of winning a premiership this season?
I’d probably say our 14’s have got a realistic chance of going all the way this year. I think there’s a fire that burns within the kids that have moved up to Under 14 level. They’ve missed out a couple of times and they really want it this year. I think if it all goes to plan it’ll happen for them – but they’ve got to work damn hard to get it.
Is there a particular age group of players that you need as soon as possible to fill a team ahead of Round 1?
We’re probably a couple of numbers down on our [two] 14’s sides. We’d like some more. We’ve got 38 players, but we’d like a few more.
If any players are interested in playing for Croydon Junior Football Club this season, what do they have to do?
