MONTROSE Junior Football Club president Gary Felstead speaks to Victoria Halkias as his club prepares for the 2014 season.
Victoria Halkias: Overall, were you satisfied with what the club achieved, both on and off the field, in 2013?
Gary Felstead: I’m very happy with our 2013 season. Two teams in the Grand Final and we were fortunate enough to take home a flag in our Under 13’s group last year. Very pleased.
Approximately how many teams do you think you will field in 2014?
One in every age group, including Under 8’s. So under 8’s through to Under 15’s. We will also for the first time this year have two teams in Under 17’s.
What has the feeling been like around the club over the pre-season?
Everyone is looking forward to the new season coming up and there is a very good vibe around our club at Montrose.
If you had to pick one, which team do you think is the club’s best chance of winning a premiership this season?
That’s always a pressure one…I would like to think that our Under 15 team for this year will have a very good season. We’re building a full squad there and developing a very good team, so hopefully that will take them a long way into finals.
Is there a particular age group of players that you need as soon as possible to fill a team ahead of Round 1?
Yes, there are a couple of age groups we’re looking for players if we can get them. We’ve got our Under 13 team for this year that will be an A-grade team. We’re looking for possibly up to three or four players there. If there are some boys out there that would like to come and have a game of football, it will be a very good standard.
And our Under 17’s. We’re striving to get two teams and we’re looking for maybe another four, five or six players that could top up that age group. That would be fantastic also.
