EASTERN Lions Junior Football Club president Andrew Buckley speaks to Dan Campbell as his club prepares for the 2014 season.
Dan Campbell: Overall, were you satisfied with what the club achieved, both on and off the field, in 2013?
Andrew Buckley: Yeah, [satisfied with] all of them. Going into last year we struggled with numbers. We lost our 16’s and we almost lost the 13’s. We ended up getting the 13’s up, they won a game and the boys walked off happy. And we’ve been able to get the 14’s up this year. The 8’s were good as well.
Approximately how many teams do you think you will field in 2014?
Four – Under 8’s, 10’s, 12’s, 14’s.
What has the feeling been like around the club over the pre-season?
Pretty good. We’ve got a couple of new sponsors [and] they sponsored the pre-season shirts. The kids have got them on and been running around with them. There’s been some negative talk going on outside the club about the club folding, but that couldn’t be any further from the truth.
If you had to pick one, which team do you think is the club’s best chance of winning a premiership this season?
It’s pretty tough. You’d like to think they’re all a chance. I couldn’t really say – they’ve all got potential.
Is there a particular age group of players that you need as soon as possible to fill a team ahead of Round 1?
We could always do with a couple more of all of them – 8’s, 10’s, 12’s, and 14’s. But predominantly probably the 12’s and the 14’s if we could get a couple more.
