2014 EFL Pre-Season Wiki | Tomorrow: Whitehorse Pioneers
ST SIMONS Junior Football Club president David Mackay chats to Ben Waterworth as his club prepares for the 2014 season.
Ben Waterworth: Overall, were you satisfied with what the club achieved, both on and off the field, in 2013?
David Mackay: We had a great 2013. We got the majority of our four competitive sides into finals and got through to a couple of Grand Finals. Off the field we were good, but we’re looking for a bit more sponsorship in 2014. We’re hoping for as good as season as last year.
Approximately how many teams do you think you will field in 2014?
We’ll have one in virtually every grade except the Under 17’s where we’ll have two sides.
What has the feeling been like around the club over the pre-season?
The keenness of the younger guys has been great. The littlest blokes even want to do a pre-season. They follow the AFL and think they should be doing a pre-season too.
The real younger ones will start a couple of weeks out from the start of season so they don’t get too burnt out. The Under 17’s have been training since just before Christmas, so they know each other and coaches pretty well now.
If you had to pick one, which team do you think is the club’s best chance of winning a premiership this season?
I’d have to say the Under 14’s.
Is there a particular age group of players that you need as soon as possible to fill a team ahead of Round 1?
Under 10’s. At this stage we’ve got one and a half teams, so if we get a few more Under 10’s, we’ll be able to field two teams. That is our priority. A few more Under 17’s would be nice as well.
