15 DAYS TO GO – THE BASIN

BEARS ON THE PROWL

Choose Tap” Countdown | The Basin Football Club

By Dyson Baker

Since 2000 The Basin have put themselves in a position to be successful time after time. Eight finals appearances in 15 years including a number of Grand Final appearances finally boosted the club from fourth Division in 2012. Over the last two seasons in Division 3 the Bears have claimed 10 wins in 2013 and nine wins last year. A pretty solid return for a club coming out of Division 4 for the first time in 15 years. Coach Michael Glassborrow had a plan when going after quality older talent ahead of 2012, it did the job and the Bears are better for it. However, with one of the older looking sides, from the outside looking in, it seems as though the Bears window of success is quickly closing.

The Bears went after Essendon Douta Stars Backman Jonathan Morris and managed to pick up the 29 year old. Morris played for the EDFL in last year’s AFL Victoria Metropolitan Championships, playing a pivotal role against the NFL. Morris was awarded best on ground for the EDFL and later named in the Vic Metro squad. Alongside Morris comes; Jarred Bell and Matthew Hayhurst (YVMDFL), Aaron Findlay (Nepean FNL), Cameron Cairns (Ringwood), Daniel Price (North Ringwood), Ben Cox, Jayden Malek and Adam Read (SFL), Ben Dahan (Coldstream), Pat Garrity (Boronia) and Aaron Jones (North Central FL)

OUTS

The Club has lost talent, although has managed to retain the general crux of their senior list; Justin Dight and Ben Searle (Bayswater), Stephen Tibb, Timothy Driscoll (VAFA), Joshua Wilson and Will Gayfer (SFL), Aaron Grist (AFL Q), Jarred Clark (Lilydale), Luke Meddings (Coldstream) Moving forward the club will need to lock down its younger players, guys like Trevor Mills and Max Kruger who are now in the prime of their careers will be hot property over the next couple of seasons. ‘CHOOSE TAP’ WATER BOTTLE OFFER

MOVING FORWARD

After consistent seasons over the past two years it will be in the back of players’ minds that they are edging closer and closer to playing the right kind of football that will have them regularly featuring in September. The Bears start their season with last year’s Grand Finalists in Templestowe at the Bear Cave then backing up in the next two weeks with “Rivalry games” against South Belgrave and Heathmont.
