Diarmuid McAlary Secretary – Donvale Magpies JFC
Overall, were you satisfied with what the club achieved, both on and off the field, in 2014? We were very happy with what was successful season for Donvale Magpies JFC. We fielded seven sides and our Auskick numbers continued to grow. We have very strong player numbers now from Auskick through to under 12s. A couple of gaps in the older age groups which we are working through but our foundations are really strong. Our philosophy and priorities are about development, teamwork and generating a real sense of family and community. That being said, it was great to win two Premierships last year with our 17Bs and 15Cs both achieving our first flags for a few years.
Approximately how many teams do you think you will field in 2015?
We expect to field 7 sides; though with some further potential for having two sides in Under 9s and Under 17s.
What has the feeling been like around the club over the pre-season?
The place is buzzing. The re-birth of our senior club has added loads of vitality and energy to the whole club. Our junior and senior clubs work closely together and we’re all enjoying the work that’s been done inside the club rooms.
If you had to pick one, which team do you think is the club’s best chance of winning a premiership this season?
Depending on gradings, we’re hoping for big seasons from our Under 12s and 14s. Our 2015 Under 12s made the finals last year which was a great learning experience. Our Under 14 group have battled over the past few seasons but have a few new recruits, not the least of which is Brendan “Billy” McCormack who is coaching them this year. Billy’s experience is already having a profound impact and that group of players have a real spring in their step.
Is there a particular age group of players that you need as soon as possible to fill a team ahead of Round 1?
A number of our 2014 Under 9s were bottom age, so this years Under 10 group is on the look-out for a few more players. Billy McCormack is of course always looking for talent and he has some spots left on the list – so anyone looking for the opportunity to play for the Interleague coach…..
