CAREY APPOINTED HEAD OF UMPIRING

The Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL) is pleased to announce the appointment of former VFL/AFL field umpire Peter Carey as Head of Umpiring.

Carey brings extensive experience to the position, having umpired 307 senior VFL/AFL games including three night and four day grand finals. He is a life member of the AFL and served as an AFL Match Review Panel member for six years between 2005 and 2010.

Since 2010, Carey has worked for Basketball Australia as referee manager for the NBL, WNBL and SEABL.

Carey will oversee the recruitment and retention of all umpires, appoint and manage coaches for each umpiring discipline and conduct all umpire education and accreditation programs.

EFNL Chief Executive Officer Troy Swainston said Carey was a welcome addition to the League and would have the opportunity to continue the great work of his predecessor whilst also putting his own stamp on the role.

“We are extremely pleased to have a person of the calibre of Peter join the EFNL administration team,” Swainston said.

Swainston paid tribute to outgoing Head of Umpiring Scott Van Noordennen who will finish with the League at the end of 2019 after four seasons in the role.

“We thank Scott for his service and commitment to the EFNL and wish him well in his future endeavours,” Swainston said.

Carey will commence with the EFNL on Tuesday, February 4, 2020.
